Branch Owner and Coach

Background:
  • Nica was born on May 26, 1989 in Pretoria. She spent her years at school (1996 - 2007) in Theresapark primary school, in Theresapark and at Gerrit Maritz high school, in Pretoria-North.
  • She found her love for culture, sport and music and singing, in her primary school, and she took part in the Junior Revue, “Vonkelnootjies”. Her first experience with the stage opened up a wonderful world of performing arts, and that’s where her passion for music and singing started developing. She started solo vocal training at Deon Theron Music Studio in 2002.
  • During high school she continued to follow her love and passion for sport and culture. She performed well on all levels: sport (athletics, netball, tennis, and softball – received Gauteng colours), culture (public speaking, debate, revue, solo singing and group singing), she performed well in merits and academics, and filled many leadership roles (editor of the school paper, captain of various sport teams, chosen to serve on the Junior City Council, organiser of the school talent evening, and head-girl in Matric). She received the “Jacques Vivier Kultux” trophy for the most all-rounded culture student, three years in a row.
  • Throughout the years she took part in various singing competitions and she won recording time in a studio. With this prize she recorded her first demo album in 2005. She started vocal training with Chris Coetzer at CC Studios in Centurion. She started performing as an artist with Chris Coetzer and in her own private capacity at weddings, functions, churches, restaurants, festivals and seminars.
  • She started studying at the University of Pretoria (2008-2012) where she spent the next five years as an active house member of Madelief Residence. She completed two degrees: an undergraduate degree in BA Languages Journalism, and an after-graduate degree in BA Honours Translation and Professional Writing. During her time at university she scaled down her performances as an artist and focused on completing her studies. She also started working as a backing vocalist for various artists and recording labels.
Studio Cha:
  • In 2009 Nica joined Studio Cha as an adult student where she started taking solo training and songwriting classes with Carlé van Deventer. In 2010 the studio approached her and she started working part-time as an administrative agent and as a coach in training. In 2013 she has completed two university degrees and she is a full-time teacher at Studio Cha. She is also busy doing freelance translation and writing.
  • Some of the most important moments at Studio Cha are the times when they have won best studio at various competitions. The most fun and precious moments is the year-end concert that we have every year. Nica has a great passion for people and will always help wherever it is possible for her to do so. The most fulfilling part of her work is the personal growth she has experienced, the new family that she has found in her students and their parents and her colleagues, as well as the development that she witnesses in her students on a personal level and a singing level every day.
Special Awards, Prizes and Opportunities:
  • She participated in many Eisteddfods and singing competitions (2002-2007) as a soloist, as a member of duets/groups and performed well, often receiving prizes and awards. In 2006 and 2007, she consecutively received a trophy for the general winner of light music gr11 and gr 12 daughters at the Afrikaans Arts Institution of Pretoria.
  • She participated in the final of Tehila and Jubilaté gospel music festival hosted by Radio Pulpit in 2004 as a member of a trio and as a soloist in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
  • In matric she was chosen as one of two students to tour to Scandinavia (Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway) with Chris Coetzer, on a singing tour where they hosted 10 concerts in cathedrals and churches, as well as informal shows at companies and local sites.
  • In 2009 she took part in the Gridstar competition: in March she won “Randall Rates U”, in June she placed second in the monthly competition, and in July she won the monthly competition.
  • In 2008-2012 she participated in the ATKV University Serenade. Serenade is a group of 20 residence members that create an 18 min stage production. It is accapella music that is sometimes sung in 8-part harmonies, and it has a theme and stage choreography. In her five years as part of a serenade team, her residence won twice (2008 en 2009) and represented their university at Serenade Nationals. In 2011 they placed second. In 2012 it was her duty as house committee member to coach the serenade. With the help of the wonderful coach and accompanist, Pieter Bezuidenhout, she led the group to a second place in the competition.
  • In 2012 she acted in Ampie du Preez’s music video “Klaradyn” as a main character.
